DIY 1940's Knitted Scarf - with FREE Pattern

1940's Inspired Knitting

I love the look of 1940's knitted scarf accessories, so when I started learning to knit a couple of years ago I knew one of these quick projects was on the cards eventually.

I don't know about you, but I can't step foot into a little yarn shop without gravitating towards the hand-dyed skeins of yarn. The creative colour combinations just scream for me to purchase and I love that you are directly supporting a local small business owner and dyer.

But on the higher price end of yarn I have still not been able to justify a full sweaters quantity of this special yarn. Therefore, my Ravelry favourites was always filled with 'one skein wonders' to celebrate hand dyed yarn. The volume of shawls and beanies had me instantly thrown back to the versatile scarfs of the 1940's.

One Skein Knitted Scarf

Based on my many years of styling nylon headscarfs, I knew that a simple triangle shape would be perfect for multiple options for styling. I had recently knitted some dish cloths that worked in increases on each end to create a triangle (then decreases to square it out again). So following that basic technique I cast on and worked a few rows to make sure I was happy with the gauge. I didn't want the fabric to be too dense as it would be folded and wrapped on my head (or neck). I continued to knit and increase until the triangle was wide enough to tie on my head comfortably. Then added some eyelet features along the top to match the increases on the sides before casting off.
